This week, Rush gleefully reported on a study which seems to show that, as the headline on his website proclaims, “The Ugly Support Liberal Causes”. Naturally, Rush believes that this is proof that liberal causes attract losers. Since, you know, physical attractiveness is the ultimate measure of one’s worth. Here I thought conservatives touted themselves as the ones who base their lives on deeper spiritual values, but I guess those values go no deeper than the skin.
The study was conducted at Stanford University and the results indicated that those who think of themselves as unattractive were more likely to be willing to give a donation to Occupy Wall Street. Ah, people who support Occupy have lower self-esteem, right? Well, here’s the interesting part of the study Rush didn’t talk about–those who think of themselves as physically attractive also think that they belong to an elite social class–whether or not that’s actually the case. So it might be that those who see themselves as beautiful are in fact…delusional. They might be like the working class schlubs who vote Republican because they have a firm conviction that they, too, will strike it rich one day. Hey, they don’t need to worry about the social problems Occupy wrestles with, because they know they are gorgeous and successful–or at least imagine that they are.
As for Rush, the unattractive have been a topic of his for a long time now. He has often claimed a link between unattractiveness and liberalism, and is quite proud of himself for doing so. Poor Rush–he’s still in middle school. He thinks that if he keeps bashing the other uncool kids, he will become one of the beautiful people himself. Obviously, money and fame can’t buy you a sense of emotional security.
So here goes from the ugly liberal to the ugly conservative–Rush, you’ll always be one of us. You can’t get away from that. Stop picking on your own tribe.

Except that Rush is, somewhat sadly, very close to right. The ugly are often losers, especially in their own minds, and they’re the ones supporting the OWS hate-groups.
Face it, beauty is largely based upon genetically determined attitudes towards health in reproductive partners. All that ever changes is that the forebrain can alter to some extent what is perceived as healthy.
Losers in life reproductive game – the ONLY game in town – tend to gravitate towards causes that attack their genetic “betters.”

Sure, there will always be a part of us which reacts to physical beauty. But it would seem we have evolved beyond basing our judgment of people on just that aspect. If we haven’t, then we haven’t made as much progress as a species as I’ve thought. And yet, it does look like people in our world can be successful because of intelligence, skill etc. As I said in my blog, conservatives are the ones who claim that they rely on deeper spiritual values. I would hope that would be true, since I’m a spiritual person myself, and so don’t believe the reproductive game is the only one in town. But Rush’s show doesn’t exactly reflect that perspective.
I’m not ready to make any definitive conclusions based on the results of one study, but the people who see themselves as unattractive come out looking like the more compassionate and “better” individuals here.

Yes, people can be materially or financial successful irrespective of their looks, though looking good certainly helps a lot. It’s a harder, however, to be sexually successful – unless one is going to “financialize” that as well – without looking well.
The thing is that I can see the intersection between the ugly and OWS but don’t see the link to the Conservatives. It’s not like they were going to be involved with the OWS rabble in the first place.
As for the reproductive game – We are souls that have bodies, but those bodies have a great impact upon our spirits…and species don’t evolve past their hindbrains that I can see. We just modify the inputs and outputs a little.
😆 No matter how far we go, we’re still 3 feet tall, hairy, and deathly afraid of leopards.

Oh, I agree that the body is very important. I only object when the focus becomes solely on the body, especially from people who claim to care about ideas or value systems.
That’s where my beef with conservatives lies in this case. Indeed, I don’t expect them to support OWS, as there are serious ideological differences there. My problem is when conservatives pretend to care about the soul, but then, as in Rush’s case, so much of their criticism of the opposition centers on the body, in a very shallow way. I suspect that this is coming from a place of insecurity, though.
